Students from the surrounding area will come together to compete for advancement to Texas History Day, a state-level contest for students from grades 6-12. Project categories may include exhibits, papers, documentaries, performance, or websites. The public is invited to view these exceptional samples of student work throughout the day.

The air is losing its chill and birds are singing from the treetops. The grass is greening up and spring is just around the corner! What better way to greet the new spring season than with an adventure! So head to Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site for a rollicking ride on our bright red replica stagecoach Saturday, March 8! Your adventure at Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site will include the foot-tapping rhythms of our favorite dulcimer players, a tour of the country Inn, the poetry of Kenny Lewis and, of course, the rough and rollicking ride aboard the stagecoach! The stagecoach ride transports passengers back in time as they travel to the historic Grimes County Courthouse and return to the Inn! Activities begin at 11:00 a.m. and continue until 3:00 p.m. This event is Free!

Easter Sunrise Service
Springtime in Texas is a time of nature’s awakening, with the great beauty of blooming wildflowers and singing birds. It is also a time of spiritual re-awakening where man may renew himself and restore hope. This is the time to join family and friends, hands, hearts and voices at the Easter Sunrise Service held at Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site in Anderson, Texas. This special spiritual event is organized by the Anderson Baptist Church, United Methodist Church of Anderson, the McKenzie Chapel and Navasota Presbyterian Church. Prayers, hymns, scripture and meditation mark this event as a reverent celebration of the Resurrection. Fellowship follows with refreshments provided by congregation members. Service begins at 7:00 a.m.

Ride our bright red stagecoach from the Inn to the restored Courthouse, enjoy the sweet strains of dulcimer music and dry a tear or two from your eyes as you listen to Kenny Lewis’ touching and often humorous cowboy poetry. The event also features guided tours of the Inn! The park has picnic tables spread out under the trees for your lunchtime enjoyment! Stagecoach Days
July is the month for picnics, lemonade, watermelon and big shade trees. This year, July is also the perfect time to visit Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site and take part in our Stagecoach Days event. On Saturday, July 12, from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. our lovely red replica stagecoach, pulled by Percheron draft horses, Willie and Waylon, will be taking passengers to the historic Grimes County Courthouse and back! Also included in the event are tours of the Inn, dulcimer music and cowboy poetry. Just what the doctor ordered to cure the summertime blues, and also amazingly, it’s Free!

School Daze-Education in early Texas

Hispanic Heritage Month
Throughout the month of September, Star of the Republic Museum will have a temporary display in the Showers-Brown Discovery Center entitled “Diez y Seis de Septiembre: Mexican Independence Day.” This display examines Mexico’s quest for independence from Spain and demonstrates how Hispanic heritage has influenced our lives today.

On the second and fourth Wednesdays in September and October, the museum and the farm will present “Childhood in Early Texas,” an interactive, hands-on program for the entire family. Discover what life was like for a child in the mid-19th century during a visit to this historic site. In the museum, learn about childhood chores, clothes, and schools, and then make some old-fashioned toys to take home. Take a break with a picnic lunch in the pecan grove along the Brazos River. At Barrington Farm, experience life on an 1850s Texas farm, strolling through the cotton field, picking a boll or two along the way. Hours: 10:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Cost: $5/child, $6/adult Lunch not provided, picnics welcome! Reservations required: Call 936-878-2461, ext. 236 for reservation

Summer has come and gone and the kids are getting back into their studies. Why not give them a break from the books and visit Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site in Anderson, Texas? Students and parents alike can enjoy a different kind of history lesson and learn about the way people really lived in 1850’s Texas. On Saturday, September 13 the young and young at heart can ride our bright, red replica stagecoach, tour the Inn, relax to the soothing strumming of the Star of Texas dulcimer players and reminisce with our cowboy poet, Kenny Lewis. Picnic tables are scattered under the shade trees for your convenience! 11:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. This lesson in Texas history is Free!

Texian Day
Fall is in the air and so is Texian Day at Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site. On Saturday, visitors can experience a day at an 1850’s stagecoach inn! Hear the hammers of the smithy ring out against the anvil. Watch the spinners and weavers move with rhythmic motion as they ply their trade. Observe chuck wagon cook, Eddie Eppler create gastronomic masterpieces as dulcimer musicians coax melodies from strings and wood. And don’t miss the oft-times humorous and occasionally melancholy cowboy poet as he spins yarns and weaves tales out of thin air.

Members of the Houston Area Blacksmiths Association and other smiths from around Texas will meet at Barrington and demonstrate this vanishing art. Native American Heritage Month
The focus at the museum for the month of November will be “Native Americans in Texas.” A special display will be presented in the Showers-Brown Discovery Center related to this topic. An expanded program on Native Americans will be offered to students in Grades K-2, at the museum for a fee of $1 per student. Minimum group size: 20 students. Reservations required.

Twilight * Firelight at Fanthorp
Fanthorp Inn State Historic Site in Anderson, Texas celebrates the holiday season with a journey back to the 1850’s. On Saturday, 29 November, the Inn opens her doors for our TWILIGHT*FIRELIGHT holiday event. Enjoy the ambiance of the candle lit Inn, period music, poetry, stagecoach rides and a host of living history characters. Activities begin at the Grimes County courthouse where visitors board a replica stagecoach or hay wagon for the ride down Main Street to Fanthorp Inn. Upon arrival, visitors will meet weary travelers, cowboys, Henry and Rachel Fanthorp and personalities who will entertain with stories, poetry, music, wassail and good cheer. The atmosphere of the Inn and 1850’s personalities brings to the holiday season enchantment and peace – a delight for the young and young-at-heart! Tickets are located in front of the courthouse from 4:30pm until 7:30pm.
